There are two ways to increase your business: either by increasing your assets, thereby increasing your resource use, or using your assets more efficiently. At FMYI, we believe innovation is the key to efficiency and that doing things differently and sustainably will increase your effectiveness and decrease your long-term impact on the world at large. After all, every day should be Earth Day!
Empowering teams to make a difference: The first step to efficiency is empowerment. An empowered team is one that collaborates and produces more results than what the team would individually, defying the Law of Diminishing Returns. FMYI empowers teams, both internally and externally, by enabling communication, cooperation and collaboration, effectively and consistently, regardless of time or geographic location. Maximize contributions by keeping all members on the same page, empowering the individual, team and business, all in one fair swoop.
Sustainability: it’s in our DNA: If we don’t believe in ourselves, we’re aware that we’ll eventually just drive ourselves batty. Within the workplace, we do our best to keep things light, entertaining, and honest, and we strive to create a desirable community to work within.
2020 Sustainability Vision
We announced our vision for zero impact at the 2010 Net Impact conference. We’re working towards zero impact for the decade starting in 2020!
Zero impact operations: net zero servers, net zero office footprint, net zero commuting, 100% renewable energy, net zero waste.
Zero impact features: crowdsource and tools for sustainable solutions to help achieve zero impact.
Zero impact community: empower our stakeholders to be change agents to achieve zero impact in their community.
Triple bottom line
At FMYI we recognize that doing anything in a sustainable manner is a journey—that we must be pointed in the right direction early in that campaign. We believe in a multifaceted approach to business, supporting people, planet and profit.
People: People are the most variable asset that a business has; their attitude, character and talent will make or break a company, and are therefore the most important part. FMYI works hard to empower teams via organization, centralization, accessibility and security, as well as to connect clients to our sustainability partners, so more ingenuity can be sparked.
Planet: At FMYI, we believe that we don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, but rent it from our children. We’re doing our best to keep this place clean while we make our livelihood, so our kids and grandkids can enjoy life in the same manner that we have.
Profit: The fruit of our daily efforts, our business needs profit to continue on course, and to retain the ability to reinvest in further sustainable projects. Not only that, but every resource not consumed is a resource not paid for. Working online saves paper, transportation costs and time lost to organization issues, not to mention that it keeps everyone on the same page.
Platform
Behind the shiny façade of FMYI’s platform, are not only the brains of an immensely useful communication tool, but also a whole host of environmentally friendly tools that we use, and that we provide for your team.
CO2 Stats: We buy carbon offsets for the energy used by our servers and your computer from The CO2Stats Project.
Commuting tracker: A commuting tracker is provided on the account page for every user to help you and your team remember to commute sustainably and measure how well that is being accomplished.
Printing optimization: The FMYI platform helps enable paperless offices and reduces shipping needs. On top of that, if you do need to print, we display a view that minimizes ink/toner and pages, saving you resources. We highly suggest our clients use printers and copiers with duplex capabilities—have double-sided printing as the default setting. For teams without that luxury, we suggest the collecting single-sided paper for reuse somewhere near the printer.
Template: Sustainability information about some of our partners, and how you can become more involved in creating your own sustainability initiatives is included in most FMYI templates.
Sustainability commitment
Sustainability has been a part of our DNA from the beginning and our commitment to corporate responsibility is written into our Articles of Incorporation. Through our internal company practices, digital collaboration product, and community engagement, we are using our business as a platform to raise awareness about sustainability. It's simply the FMYI way.
Company
At FMYI, we realize that sustainability is not an easy sprint or long-haul marathon, but rather a journey towards zero impact. Our goal is to minimize our environmental footprint, and maximize our societal impact. We know that there's a long way to go, but we have also had some of our successes recognized:
• Certification: FMYI is a certified B Corporation. B Corps are a new type of corporation which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Corps meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards, meet high legal accountability standards, and build business constituency for good business. Our goal is to continually improve our B Corp rating.
• Energy: We recently achieved the City of Portland's Climate Champions designation. Carbon offsets for the energy used by our servers and your computer provided by The CO2Stats Project. We're also a member of the Climate Savers initiative.
• Transportation: Employees are encouraged to commute using public transportation or by bike. We offer discounts on car sharing through Zipcar, access to bikes, flexible telecommuting options, and provide monthly TriMet mass transit passes for eligible employees through the Lloyd TMA.
• Recycling: Reduce, reuse and recycle is a corporate mantra and we're a Recycle at Work partner.
• Office: We're a tenant of the Leftbank Project, which incorporated green building principles in its renovation.
• Procurement: We utilize paperless collaboration on FMYI, computers rated at least silver through EPEAT, and business cards from Pinball Publishing. Sustainability is also part of the criteria we use when evaluating vendors.
• Employees: Every employee goes through Natural Step Network training, Northwest Earth Institute discussion courses, and can take advantage of volunteer opportunities during the workday.
• Community: Grants and discounts are provided to organizations engaged in social and environmental causes.
